4년 전 등번호 없던 청년, 4년 만에 월드컵 영웅 등극

오현규는 12일(한국시간) 멕시코 과달라하라 스타디움에서 열린 체코와의 2026 북중미월드컵 조별리그 A조 1차전에서 역전 결승골을 터뜨리며 한국의 2대 1 승리를 이끌었다. 그의 왼발에서 나온 한 방은 한국 축구의 월드컵 통산 40번째 득점이자 역대 8번째 승리를 완성한 값진 골이었다.

이날 38도에 육박하는 고열에도 출전을 강행한 오현규는 홍명보호 출범 이후 A매치 7호골을 기록하며 손흥민에 이어 해당 기간 대표팀 득점 2위에 올랐다. 후반 24분 손흥민을 대신해 그라운드를 밟은 그는 선배가 떠난 자리를 메우듯 역전골을 꽂아 넣었다. 교체 당시 두 선수가 하이파이브를 하는 순간은 한국 축구 간판 골잡이의 바통이 오가는 듯한 장면으로 남았다.

오현규에게 월드컵은 애증의 무대였다. 카타르 대회 때 그는 동료 선수들의 트래핑 훈련을 위해 공을 던져주는 역할도 마다하지 않았다. 당시 숙소에서 공책에 ‘4년 뒤 당당히 등번호를 달고 오자’고 적었던 오현규는 당당하게 18번을 달고 역대 한국인 월드컵 26번째 득점자로 이름을 올렸다.

해마다 한 단계씩 발전해 온 오현규에게 상무 시절은 빼놓을 수 없는 전환점이다. 당시 상무 사령탑으로 오현규를 지도했던 김태완 위원은 첫 만남을 떠올리며 이번 활약이 놀랍지 않다고 강조했다. 그는 “현규가 한국을 대표하는 스트라이커가 될 것이라고 믿어 의심치 않았다”며 “압도적인 피지컬은 물론 배우고자 하는 욕심과 간절함이 남달랐다. 웃음과 애교 많은 귀여운 청년이 경기장에만 들어가면 맹수처럼 돌변했다”고 회상했다.

김 위원이 가장 인상 깊게 기억하는 장면도 이런 승부욕과 맞닿아 있었다. 그는 “선수단 휴식 시간에 운동장에서 ‘펑’ 소리와 함께 골망이 흔들리는 소리가 들렸다”며 “감독실에서 창밖을 보니 당시 일병이던 현규가 혼자 슈팅 연습을 하고 있었다. 출전 시간을 늘려 달라는 현규의 무언의 시위였다. 그때 ‘물건이구나’ 싶었다”고 말했다.

유럽 진출을 목표로 또래 선수들보다 일찍 병역 문제 해결을 선택한 것도 같은 맥락이다. 오현규가 프로 2년 차에 상무행을 택한 것은 성공에 대한 열망 때문이었다.
